DigitalOcean’s partnership with Redis® has served as a cornerstone for our Database-as-a-Service portfolio, giving customers a fully-managed Redis database offering. In accordance with Redis’ updated trademark policy, we’re changing the name of our Managed Database with Redis® product to Managed Caching. Read on to learn more about this change and what it means for DigitalOcean users.
As of March 20, 2024, all upcoming Redis versions will be released under source-available licenses. Beginning with Redis 7.4, Redis Community Edition will be dual-licensed under the Redis Source Available License (RSALv2) and the Server Side Public License (SSPLv1). As a result, Redis, starting with version 7.4, will no longer be distributed under the three-clause Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) license. You can review Redis’ updated trademark policy and their blog post that announces their adoption of dual-source available licensing.
In accordance with the updated Redis Trademark Policy, we will be updating all references to Managed Database for Redis® to Managed Caching on all DigitalOcean web pages, digital assets, video publishings, blogs, product documentation, and other web-published collaterals. Importantly, all references to Managed Database for Redis® will change to Managed Caching in the DigitalOcean console as well.
The most important thing to note is that there will not be any changes in the services, functionality of services, or capabilities of the DigitalOcean Managed Caching offering. At this time, customers do not need to take any action to continue using, deploying, or building on our Managed Caching offering. Managed Caching is still based on the open-source Redis version 7.2. The service itself, any associated API endpoints, CLI calls or other functionality associated with creating or using Managed Caching will not change.
DigitalOcean Managed Caching remains a robust, scalable, and fully-managed database engine for growing digital businesses that’s also easy to use and reliable. With automated backups, updates, and monitoring, Managed Caching allows developers to focus on building their applications rather than database management. Our intuitive user interface and integration with other DigitalOcean services helps to ensure a smooth experience. Additionally, high availability, automatic failover, and scalable performance make it ideal for applications with varying workloads. With predictable pricing and end-to-end security, DigitalOcean Managed Caching offers flexibility for businesses of all sizes, including startups.
